Ayamonte to Doñana

For the first day of actual cycling, less than 100 km separate us from our destination: the Doñana Natural Park. There we will spend the night in a campsite just outside Matalascañas. Very little elevation, wind on our back, and many deserted stretches: we enjoyed the ride so much! Almost the entire route is on a cycle path, close to the water, if not actually on the water, on narrow roads running through wetlands. The idyllic ride is briefly interrupted by the industrial area of Huelva: a collection of gigantic warehouses and smoking factory chimneys. Fortunately, shortly after Huelva, the cycle path resumes, taking us directly to the campsite entrance. We pitch our tents and rush to take a dip before sunset. We are surprised to find an ancient medieval tower in the middle of the beach. The entire surrounding coastline has been eroded, and what remains of the tower stands there to remind us where the coastline was just a few centuries ago and how much the landscape around us is constantly changing.
