Chefchaouen to El Bellota

Today we visit Chefchaouen, the so-called blue city, not far from our motel, but perched on a hill. We start the day with a climb, but luckily it doesn't take long. When we reach the beginning of the city, in the more modern part, we stop for breakfast. A little further on is the square in front of the walls, where you enter the medina and where the throng of tourists begins, who quickly—and eagerly—visit this city for a few hours. The comings and goings of buses entering and leaving the city is incredible! The blue city is one of the most famous stops in Morocco, and the small medina is super crowded with tourists, with every available surface used as a shop window for one of the dozens of small shops. I leave the two main streets of the medina and the atmosphere changes considerably. There are no more tourists around, just stables with livestock inside the houses, children smoking hashish, and the famous blue is much more faded. We leave the city shortly afterwards, with the impression that it is more of a picture-postcard tourist attraction than a real city. Fortunately, we soon find ourselves back in rural Morocco, with a barren landscape of fields recently plowed after the wheat harvest. It is also full of olive groves, and we can appreciate the intense, acrid smell of the first pressing of the olives. We arrive at the campsite we had chosen, and it is very nice! It is an eco-camping project with a small shop and an restaurant where local products are sold and cooked. We order a goat tagine with vegetables and a kefta tagine with eggs, accompanied by an eggplant stew and wholemeal bread. Delicious!

Deliziosa!
